Installing Logsign on VMware with ISO file

VMware ESXi is the latest hypervisor architecture presented by VMware. It has an ultra-thin architecture with no reliance on a general-purpose OS, yet still offers all the same functionality and performance of VMware ESX.

Installing Logsign on a VMware ESX Server is pretty simple and straight forward, so let’s see how it can be done.

Before starting;

- Make sure the IP address that you'll assign to Logsign has no restriction on access to the internet. If you're using a firewall or UTM; make sure that the webfilter, IPS or Application Control modules don't prevent the internet access of Logsign. Because the Logsign system will update the version from internet during setup.

 - The disk space that you'll assign to Logsign will be formatted. The iso file has Ubuntu 64-bit operating system that comes bundle with Logsign software. the Logsign software will be installed based on the Ubuntu system. So be careful not to install Logsign on an important server, because you'll be able to lose all your important data.

If you haven't downloaded the Logsign iso file yet, then you can follow this link.

Booting and installing Logsign FOCUS

Once you are connected to the remote ESX server, you will face the following window.

Now we can begin the installation/configuration process.

1 - Click on New > Virtual Machine to create the Logsign server.

2 - Follow the creation wizard of the virtual machine.

  • a - Select Typical then hit Next.

  • b - Type the desired name for the VM, and hit Next.

  • c - Select the disk space that you'll install Logsign on it.

  • d - Choose the operating system as Linux with the version as Ubuntu Linux (64-bit).

  • e - In the next step, choice the correct network adapter that is connected to internet.

f - In this step, you need to specify the disk space. The disk usage is able to change according to the count and size of your daily logs. So you can follow this link to calculate the correct and convenient disk space for you.

4 - Now review and check if all the informations are correct then click on Finish button.

  • We'll need to edit the Settings of the virtual machine and set the memory and CPU size, and then mount a CD with our ISO image to boot from.

5 - Right click on the VM you just created then click on Edit Settings. We need to specify the RAM and CPU size of our server. So you can follow this link to see our recommended minimum system requirements.

6 - Change the CD/DVD drive 1 option, and then select it as Datastore ISO file if you have uploaded the Logsign iso to the datastore. You can also show the iso file to the CD/DVD-ROM of the server from your local disk. To select it, click on Browse button, it’s going to open a new window.

7 - Browse to the ISO file and select it then click Open button just like below.

8 - Do not forget to check the Connect at power on option.

We have finished the configuration part, now let’s jump straight to the installation section.

1 - Right click on the virtual machine we just created and then click on Power > Power On.
2 - The VM is now launched and the installation process has begun, in order to see what is happening click on the Console tab.

3 - The installation is going to ask you for an IP address (make sure it’s not used in your network).

4 - Select Continue (using the arrow keys) and hit Enter, now it’s going to ask for the netmask that belongs to your network. You can contact to your network administrator about that.

5 - Put the gateway IP address for the VM to connect to internet.

6 - It'll ask you for a DNS server IP address at last. If you have a local name server on your network, then you can add it, else you can add an external one.

7 - Now that we provided all necessary informations for the setup, it’s going to start copying files and installing the operating system first.

8 - A window confirming that the installation process is going to write the changes to the disk you chosen, select and hit Yes in order to proceed the installation.

Once the installation process is completed, the VM will be rebooted automatically and then will load all the necessary components/services. Wait about 2 minutes (it depends on the speed of your VM, RAM/CPU allocated) to finalize it.

You will see the screen below including the IP address and the version of Logsign after all the processes opened.

9 - Now you can open a web browser and then connect to Logsign opening page via http://IP_YOU_HAVE_CHOSEN/ and then it'll redirect you to the license screen.

You can select it as Trial to have a 30-day demonstration mode, or I have a License Key to insert the serial key that you purchased before.

After you fill in the other information fields, click on Submit button. It'll redirect you to the Logsign opening page again. You can type admin for both username and password fields as default.
